A key attraction near Morelia is the annual migration of monarch butterflies.

11. Puebla City (Puebla de Zaragoza)

Puebla is a city full of color and history, famous for its incredible food, unique ceramics, and beautiful buildings. Rumor has it, Puebla also has more churches than any other city in Mexico.

Its full name is Puebla de Zaragoza, though it’s also called Puebla de los Ángeles. This means Puebla of the Angels, and you might hear it called Mexico’s City of Angels.

It’s one of the most famous cities in Mexico, and where the Cinco de Mayo battle happened. This battle, fought on May 5, 1862, saw Mexico win against France, and it’s celebrated every year.

Puebla’s old town is filled with more than 70 churches and thousands of buildings from the colonial era, many decorated with the city’s famous talavera tiles. These ceramics can be seen all over the city, adding to its charm.

Puebla is also the home of mole poblano, a rich, chocolatey, must-try sauce. Visitors can explore the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, key sites in the Cinco de Mayo battle, or check out the vast Puebla Cathedral.

In Mexico, there are what’s known as pueblos mágicos, or magic towns.

These unique small towns in Mexico are awarded the prestigious designation of pueblo mágico by the Secretary of Tourism. They aim to spotlight these places visitors otherwise might not know about.

There are currently 177 pueblos magicos in Mexico, and Puebla state has the most pueblos magicos. These include Cholula, Cuetzalan, Zacatlán, and my personal favorite, Atlixco.

12. Zacatecas City

The Zacatecas Cathedral is a famous neoclassical structure built in the late-19th Century. 

Zacatecas, nestled in a narrow valley, is rich in history and culture. Known for its baroque architecture, this is just one quality that has earned it a UNESCO World Heritage designation.

The city was founded in the 16th Century following the discovery of silver, and its winding streets and alleys rise steeply from the central Plaza de Armas.

Among its many not-to-miss sites is the Catedral Basílica de Zacatecas, an exquisite jewel of Mexican churrigueresque architecture. This is a Spanish Baroque style characterized by intricate detail, and exaggerated decoration.

For a literal deep dive into history, the Mina El Edén, a former silver mine now offering underground tours and a museum, provides a taste of Zacatecas’s place in the mineral’s pursuit. 

The city’s view can be best admired by the Teleférico de Zacatecas, which stretches above the town to Cerro de la Bufa, a vantage point with views of the sparse but compelling desert-like topography.

For adventurers, the nearby Grutas de Cacahuamilpa is one of the world’s largest cave systems. It offers an unforgettable day of exploration, and one of the best Taxco day trips.

If you’re searching for peace and quiet, head to the Pozas Azules. These are stunning blue water pools located just an hour from Downtown Taxco — and as you can see, this colonial city has something for everyone!

16. Pátzcuaro 

In full disclosure, this started out as a Top 15 Most Beautiful Places in Mexico list — however, I found that I couldn’t stop!

I know I’m biased, but there really are so many gorgeous cities to visit in Mexico… so let’s keep exploring this list of the most beautiful and vibrant cities to visit in Mexico.

Pátzcuaro is a town in Michoacán state, celebrated for hosting one of Mexico’s best Day of the Dead celebrations. It is also among the most beautiful small towns in Central Mexico.

The event showcases a blend of indigenous Purepecha traditions and Catholic customs, offering a profoundly moving tribute to the departed.

The streets and plazas of Pátzcuaro come alive with candlelit vigils, marigolds, and elaborate altars dedicated to the deceased.

Lake Pátzcuaro becomes the center of festivities, with locals and visitors taking lantern-lit boat rides to the Island of Janitzio. You can also visit Janitzio year-round for a unique trip.

Beyond the festivities, Pátzcuaro’s rich history is evident in its architecture. It features pre-Hispanic influences and Colonial-Era buildings with red-tiled roofs surrounding ancient plazas.

Truthfully, if you were looking at a map of the best cities in Mexico, you might not see many in Northern Mexico — but you would see Monterrey.
