A Two-Day Itinerary for Backpacking Solo in Budapest, Hungary

Known as the ‘Paris of the East’, Budapest – the capital city of Hungary offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. Its rich history, lively nightlife, thermal baths, and affordability make it an enticing destination for backpackers. For solo travelers aiming to explore this enchanting city within a limited time frame, here’s a comprehensive two-day itinerary.

Day 1: Exploring Buda

Your journey begins in Buda – the older part of Budapest that sits on hilly terrains and is home to some remarkable historical sites. Start your day at Castle Hill where you can visit Buda Castle offering panoramic views over Pest on one side and Buda Hills on another.

A few steps away from there lies Fisherman’s Bastion with its fairy-tale-like towers representing seven Magyar tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th Century AD. Close by stands Matthias Church known for its ornate interiors and stunning stained-glass windows.

In the afternoon head towards Gellért Hill which houses Citadella – once used as a strategic military point but now serves as an excellent spot to view sunset over the Danube River.

Nightlife In Ruin Bars

Budapest is famous for its ruined bars situated primarily in the Jewish Quarter (District VII) on the Pest side. These are essentially abandoned buildings turned into vibrant bars filled with eclectic furniture, graffiti walls & local artwork making it a must-visit place after dusk falls. There are dozens out there but Szimpla Kert being one of the oldest stands out with its quirky decor & lively atmosphere.

Day 2: Discovering Pest

Pest offers a different vibe than the calmness of Buda. Begin your day with a visit to Parliament – one of the iconic landmarks in Budapest. Grab some pastries and coffee from a nearby local café for breakfast & head towards Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial.

After paying homage at Shoes On The Danube, spend the afternoon getting lost in the maze-like streets of the Jewish Quarter and exploring its vibrant street art. Don’t forget to pop into the Great Synagogue – the largest synagogue in Europe showcasing magnificent Moorish architecture.

Evening In Thermal Baths

Your backpacking trip won’t be complete without experiencing the city’s famous thermal baths. Széchenyi Thermal Bath is popular among both locals and tourists alike where you can relax & soak away any travel fatigue or simply enjoy an open-air pool under the starlit sky.

In Conclusion

Budapest presents a wonderful mix of cultural history, architectural grandeur, tasty cuisine, and vivacious nightlife that could easily fill up more than two days. However for those backpacking alone with limited time this two-day itinerary gives you an insight into what this enchanting Hungarian capital has to offer & will surely leave you longing for another visit soon!
