Ixtapa vs Zihuatanejo: Which is Better for Travelers?
Since they’re so close to one another, there’s really no need to choose just one. In fact, you can easily spend time in both places on a single trip.
When you’re considering where to stay, however, that usually comes down to your budget — since Ixtapa tends to be pricier than Zihuatanejo.
✅ Ixtapa: Better for Resort Travelers
Ixtapa is one of the best Mexican beach resort towns on the Pacific Coast, ideal for those seeking posh accommodations and cushy amenities.
If you’re traveling with kids, older folks, and/or luxury-seekers, Ixtapa is more convenient and will likely work better for your group.
✅ Zihuatanejo: Better for Budget Travelers
Zihuatanejo, on the other hand, is one of the coolest Mexico pueblos magicos (magic towns) that offers visitors a taste of the “real Mexico.”
This includes lots of local charm and plenty of budget accommodations and hostels, though there are also upscale hotels and villas to choose from.
🇲🇽 Fun Fact: Zihuatanejo is mentioned by Andy (Tim Robbins), the main character in The Shawshank Redemption, as the beach town he hopes to live in.
Zihuatanejo: Mexico’s Authentic Fishing Town
Although I think it will one day be among the most popular Mexico beach destinations, Zihuatanejo is still very much off the beaten track compared to places like Puerto Vallarta and Cancun.

Before we continue, you might be wondering about the Zihuatanejo pronunciation, so let’s clear that up.
Zihuatanejo is pronounced “zee-wah-ten-nay-hoe,” and called Zihua for short (pronounced “zee-wah”)… with that out of the way, let’s continue.
If you’re planning a trip to this Mexican paradise or looking for somewhere new to explore, Zihua is a colorful and lively fishing town that embodies the authentic spirit of Mexico.

Though a resort town, it still offers a laid-back and peaceful environment (compared to Cancun and Cabo), with pristine beaches like Playa el Palmar and a variety of outdoor activities.
Some of the popular attractions in Ixtapa include golfing, surfing at Playa Linda, and spotting wildlife such as crocodiles, iguanas and exotic birds.
This is also where you’ll find the larger and more modern resorts, such as the popular Las Brisas Ixtapa Mexico.
The 13 Best Things to Do in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa
Both Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo offer a range of shared experiences that allow you to explore the surrounding areas.
If you can, I highly recommend visiting both towns and traveling slightly further to some of the attractions and destinations below.
🚗 The best way to do this is by renting a car in Zihuatanejo at the airport when you fly in.
1. Spend the Day at Isla Ixtapa Island
Ixtapa Island offers a tranquil escape from the mainland’s bustling resorts — and the easiest way to get there is by booking this Isla Ixtapa tour.

When we got married in Ixtapa back in 2014, I took some of my family members on a fishing expedition to catch black tuna.
We caught dozens and ended up bringing them back to a local restaurant to fry up for us. However, you can go even further out to catch bigger fish.
The bay’s rich marine ecosystem teems with prized catches like sailfish, marlin, dorado, and yellowfin tuna, offering both novice and seasoned fishermen the thrill of the chase.

9. Take a Day Trip to Barra de Potosí
Barra de Potosí, a hidden gem near Ixtapa, offers a unique slice of tranquillity.
This charming beachside village is nestled at the southern end of Playa Larga, a stunning 9.5-mile (15 km) stretch of pristine beach lined with palm trees and dotted with family-run seafood restaurants called “enramadas.”
Visitors can enjoy horseback riding along the beach, hiking through the scenic coastal trails, or simply relaxing in the shade with a delicious meal.
The area is also home to a renowned bird and wildlife sanctuary, featuring a 4.5-mile (7 km) saltwater lagoon where you can kayak or take a guided boat tour to spot a variety of birds and local wildlife.
This is a real highlight as you can relax in the seawater without all the waves and chaos of the ocean.
In addition, I highly recommend a boat tour to witness some of the 270 species of birds in the area, the beautiful rocky islands, and some of the best whale watching in Mexico.
During our visit, we had some of the best pancakes ever at Enramada Leticia, though if you want seafood and/or Mexican food, you’ll also enjoy their menu.
10. Go on a Whale Watching Tour (Winters Only)
Speaking of whale watching, it deserves its own spot on this list as the Pacific Coast of Mexico is a spectacular place to witness massive whale migrations between December and April.
In these months, humpback whales and other whale species migrate through Mexico’s warm waters all along the Pacific Coast.
These gentle giants come here to breed and give birth, making sightings not just likely, but often downright spectacular.
While Barra de Potosí is a great place to do this, you can also go whale watching from Zihuatanejo, Playa Linda, Ixtapa Beach, and more.

11. Marvel at El Partenón Zihuatanejo
If you’re looking for a unique attraction that combines architecture, history, and the most breathtaking views in town, add El Partenón (The Parthenon) to your list.
This fascinating site, modeled after The Parthenon in Greece, has a unique history.
Originally built by the infamous Arturo Durazo Moreno, AKA “El Negro,” this grand structure was once a symbol of excess and corruption.
Today, El Partenón de Durazo has been transformed into a vibrant cultural center, hosting art exhibitions, live music, and theater events.
Perched on a hill overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay, The Parthenon provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a photographer’s paradise.
Visitors can explore its grand halls, admire local art installations, and immerse themselves in the intriguing history of the site.
It is also a popular place to watch the sunset, and although it gets busy, I recommend going for some of the best views of Ixtapa’s beaches.
12. Stroll the Paseo Capricho del Rey Boardwalk
Paseo Capricho del Rey is another must-do experience, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and modern charm.
This scenic walkway connects Playa La Ropa to the access point for Playa Las Gatas, providing breathtaking views of Zihuatanejo Bay and its crystal-clear waters.
The path is not only a stunning spot for photography but also a testament to the region’s rich history, inspired by the legend of the Purépecha emperor, Caltzontzin.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls surrounded by lush vegetation and take in the vibrant atmosphere, which is enhanced by various cultural events, including gastronomic festivals.
13. Hit the Beach (Of Course)
While Playa La Ropa Beach (pictured above) is generally considered the best beach in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, it’s far from the only one you should check out.
Among the other noteworthy beaches in the area, here are a few of my top recommendations:
- Playa Las Gatas: Located at the southern end of Playa La Ropa, this section of the beach usually has a lot less people than La Ropa
- Playa El Palmar: This is the main beach in Ixtapa, lined with resorts, bars and restaurants
- Playa Coral on Ixtapa Island: The best snorkeling beach in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, but you will need to book this boat tour to go
- Playa La Madera: Nice beach that’s accessible via the Paseo del Pescador Boardwalk
- Playa Linda: Wide, rustic stretch of beach on the northern side of Ixtapa
- Playa Quieta: Nice beach with calm waters that’s lined with palapa huts
- Playa Contramar: Small rocky beach with great snorkeling
If you’re renting a car and plan to do any day trips, there are some cool beach towns within a 45 minute drive, like Barra de Potosí and Playa Troncones.
Where to Stay in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa

However, you have plenty of options for modern hotels and resorts, especially with stunning ocean views, when you stay in Ixtapa.
Conversely, if you’re looking for smaller hotels and boutique accommodations, Zihuatanejo is the place to be.

This region is renowned for its culinary delights, with a focus on fresh seafood and traditional Mexican dishes from this region.
When it comes to authentic Mexican restaurants, Zihuatanejo is the place to be — though Ixtapa has great restaurants for international food like pizzas and burgers.
1. Carmelitas Café
Carmelitas Café in Zihuatanejo is a culinary gem that embodies the authentic spirit of Mexican cuisine.
Nestled in the heart of the town, this charming café offers a cozy ambiance surrounded by lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for breakfast or lunch.
Their menu is a testament to traditional flavors from Guerrero state, with dishes like aporreadillo (scrambled eggs with shredded beef) and shrimp-stuffed poblano peppers that will tantalize your taste buds.
The café also serves refreshing traditional Mexican drinks like cafe de olla (Mexican coffee) and agua de piña (pineapple water), complemented by homemade pastries.

Angustina in Zihuatanejo is a culinary gem that shines brightly in the heart of this charming Mexican town.
Under the creative direction of one of the best Mexican chefs, Felipe Meneses, Angustina offers an elevated dining experience that celebrates the authentic flavors of Guerrerense cuisine.
The restaurant is renowned for its beautifully-plated dishes, which often feature unique ingredients like huitlacoche (corn smut) and traditional favorites such as chamorro de cerdo (braised pork shank).

During our visit, we tried a variety of different Mexican mezcals and mezcal-infused cocktails.

4. Pozolería Teosintle
One of our favorite Mexican dishes is also one of the best Mexican soups — pozole — and each state makes theirs a bit differently.
In the state of Guerrero, where both Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are located, you’ll get to try the “real deal” Guerrero style pozole at Pozolería Teosintle.
Thursdays are Pozole Day, when this culinary gem transforms into a vibrant gathering spot for locals and visitors to enjoy a mouthwatering bowl of this beloved pork and hominy stew.
Pozolería Teosintle is known for only using fresh, high-quality ingredients and giving great service, which is why it’s almost always packed.
The pozole is served with a delightful array of accompaniments, allowing diners to customize their meal to perfection.
5. Emilio’s Pizza
I’ve been all over the world, including Italy, and Emilio’s Pizza is some of the best I’ve ever had ANYWHERE! (A bold statement, I know 🍕)
The restaurant is beautiful, the pizzas are cooked in a stone oven, the ingredients are plentiful, and the taste is delicious.
In short: I highly recommend this place if you’re craving pizza, and I’m clearly not the only one.
They got so popular that they now have two locations. The original location is in Ixtapa, but there’s also one in Zihuatanejo.
6. Rubens Hamburgers
While Mexican food is one of the best cuisines on the planet, sometimes you just want a juicy burger, and that’s where Rubens comes into play.
IMO, it’s unlikely you’ll find a better burger anywhere in the area (or maybe even in all Mexico 👀), but head to Rubens Hamburgers to see for yourself.
What’s the Best Way to Get to Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo?
This one’s easy because all you have to do is fly into ZIH Airport, which is located in Zihuatanejo, but only minutes from Ixtapa by car.
I recommend booking this top-rated ZIH Airport Shuttle because they’ll be waiting for you when you land, but you can also catch a taxi at the airport.
If you plan to drive between Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo frequently, or want to do day trips to places like Soledad Ruins, Troncones Beach, and/or the Sierra de Guerrero Waterfalls, I recommend renting a car with Discover Cars.
My Final Thoughts on Traveling to Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo
Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are more than just beach destinations — they’re gateways to rich cultural experiences, breathtaking natural beauty, and unforgettable adventures.
Not only do I have family in Mexico City, which allowed for occasional road trips to the coast, but I also got married at Ixtapa’s Las Brisas Resort in 2014.
On my most recent trip, we stayed in the same hotel, both for nostalgia and because we loved it so much. For us, this hotel truly adds to Ixtapa’s charm.
What made this recent trip different, however, is we took more time to explore the area than ever before.
On previous trips, it was more about relaxing at the beach and hanging out with family, and we didn’t really experience many of its top attractions and restaurants.
That all changed on this trip and now we love Ixtapa and Zihuatanejio even more — and think you will as well.
